PEDIATRIC DENTAL EMERGENCIES FULLERTON,CA

If your child is experiencing any of the following symptoms or conditions, please give us a call immediately to determine how serious the emergency is and schedule treatment. If they need urgent after-hour treatment, please call our emergency number.
BITTEN LIP OR TONGUE
If the bite is severe enough to cause bleeding, gently clean it with water and press a cold, wet washcloth against the area to reduce swelling.
OBJECT CAUGHT IN TEETH
Try to use dental floss to gently remove the object – never use anything metal, plastic, or sharp to try to remove something caught between the teeth. If you are unsuccessful in removing the object with dental floss, please contact our office.

BROKEN, CHIPPED, OR FRACTURED TOOTH
First, have your child rinse their mouth with warm water and press a cold, wet washcloth against the injured tooth to reduce swelling. Gather as many pieces of the fractured tooth as you can and call us immediately.
KNOCKED OUT (AVULSED) TOOTH
Rinse the knocked out tooth with water only, no soap, being careful not to touch the roots of the tooth. Place the tooth into a clean container with milk and either call us immediately or head to the hospital. If you act quickly, it’s possible to save your child’s tooth.
LOOSE TOOTH
Remove any extremely loose teeth to help you child avoid swallowing or inhaling it.
TOOTHACHE
Have your child rinse their mouth with warm water and then inspect their teeth to be sure that nothing is caught between them. If pain persists, press a cold washcloth on the are to ease the pain. Do not apply heat, aspirin, or topical pain reliever directly to the painful area as this can damage the gums. If necessary, children’s pain relievers can be taken orally.
BROKEN JAW
Press a cold washcloth on the jaw to reduce swelling and call us or head to the hospital immediately. In many cases, a broken jaw is the result of a blow to the head, and severe head blows can be dangerous or even life-threatening.
AVOIDING INJURY
Many simple changes around the house can help your child avoid dental emergencies. Prevent your child from chewing on ice, popcorn kernels, or hard foods. Follow safety precautions and always use car seats and require seatbelts for your children. If your child plays sports, come into our office and we can custom-fit a mouthguard for them to comfortably protect their teeth. Help your child maintain good dental hygiene by practicing regular brushing and flossing and scheduling regular visits to our office. Please contact us to schedule an appointment for an orthodontic evaluation
